ASTRO-WEBSITE REVIEWS
by Mary Plumb

The Mountain Astrologer,   Issue #113 Feb/Mar 2004

TMA has been reviewing astrological Web sites since 1999. This seems like a good time to revisit the Internet and summarize the Web sites that we consider to be most worthy of your time.

Astrologically based political and historical commentary has some strong voices on the Web (Although there are many distinct interpretations, it is fair to note that many astrologers are decidedly left-leaning in their views.) Nancy Lubar Sommer's site (www.starlightnews.com) keep up to date on the political front. Mark Lerner's Welcome to Planet Earth (http://mcn.org/greatbear/tofc.html) and Don Cerow's Athena's Web (http://www.athenasweb.com) both have substantial articles on U.S. history and a plethora of mundane horoscopes and people in the news. Michael Wolf Star's accessible weekly column, NewsScope, is housed at Star IQ (http://www.StarIQ.com). Starcats (http://www.Starcats.com), Claudia Dikinis's site, offers observations on world affairs, as does Eric Francis's Planet Waves (http://www.planetwavesweekly.com).

Certainly, AstroDatabank (http://www.astrodatabank.com) is one of the premiere- and engagingly interactive- astrology sites; check here the most current and reliable data of people in the news. Bob Mark's site (http://www.bobmarksastrologer.com) has 88 horoscopes of famous people, with astrological sketches based on Marc Edmund Jones's horoscope patterns.

Chiron, the asteroids, and other newly discovered bodies are well represented on the Internet, and there are various ways for students to engage in study: Martha Lang-Wescott's Treehouse Mountain (http://www.treehousemountain.com) is fresh and content-rich, Jacob Schwartz's site (http://www.asteroids.com) and Zane Stein's Chiron and Friends (http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/7969/chiron.htm) provide other important resources.

Many astrology lessons and courses are available on the Web; one that is especially unique is Forum on Astrology (http://www.forumonastrology.com), where Robert Corre offers the teachings of Morin de Villefranche and Zoltan Mason.

Philip Lindsay presents a comprehensive view of esoteric astrology at his site: http://www.esotericastrologer.org/index.htm. He features a variety of authors and provides both introductory and advanced work. Night Light News (http://www.nightlightnews.com) also posts articles devoted to esoteric (here referred to as ìSoulî) astrology.

Sites for traditional astrology include Christopher Warnnock's Renaissance Astrology (http://www.renaissanceastrology.com)- which considers the interconnection of astrology, magic, and alchemy- and software developer Curtis Manwaring's Zodiac X-Files (http://www.zodiac-x-files.com). Deborah's Houlding's Skyscript (http://www.skyscript.co.uk) is another fine resource for those who study and practice traditional astrology.

People who are interested in the cultural, philosophical, or transpersonal implications of astrology can find much to enjoy on the Web. Some highlights are Bill Streett's work at Astro-Noetics (http://www.astro-noetics.com), which includes a discussion of the ideas of Ken Wilber; the trilingual (French, English, and Spanish), noncommercial journal of University Centre for Astrological Research (http://cura.free.fr/cura-en.html); Candy Hillenbrand's A Place in Space (http://www.aplaceinspace.net); and Darcy Woodall's Elemental Astrology (http://www.elemental-astrology.com).

There are quite a few Web resources for studying the various astrological techniques: Astro Numeric Service (http://www.astronumerics.com) is the site for Astro*Carto*Graphy and provides many mundane charts and maps. You can download files on the Mercury, Venus, and Mars synodic cycles from Shamanic Astrology (http://www.shamanicastrology.com). Michael R. Meyer's site, Cyber-Worl Khaldea (http://www.khaldea.com), has a series explaining waxing and waning planetary aspects and phases, and Magi Astrology (http://magiastrology.com) is where to go to explore declination. Matrix's comprehensive site (http://astrologysoftware.com) gives lots of useful tools, including the Astro*Index for technically precise definitions of terms.

Many sites are both large and well put together. The astrology section at the mega-site About.com (http://astrology.about.com) covers all the basics and adds a hint of Jungian archetypal theory, comments on world events, and some friendly message boards. Micahel McClain's site (http://www.astrology-numerology.com/astrology.html) is wonderful for beginner material, and Astrodienst (http://www.astro.com) offers advanced articles and a natal horoscope mapping feature that is easy to read.

I know this summary barely scratches the surface, but consider this just a sample of some of the remarkable work that contemporary astrology offers on the Web, where worldwide communication is at your fingertips.

Thank you Mary for all your hard work, and your years of research into each of these sites.

            Blessings to you.

            ~Don
