Apollo's Aim

Athena's Greatest Hits

It's time we talked. We haven't really sat down this year and taken a good look at the U.S. map together to see what's going on, so let's do it now, shall we?

On the 3rd of May, 1988,
Apollo's Arrows

Apollo taking aim

Apollo will let fly with his arrows at the national focus. This Solar Deity lets loose as at that time the progressed U.S. Sun will inconjunct the natal U.S. Sun. Where will these arrows fall, you might well ask? Good question.

With this "planet" aspecting itself, our area of interpretation is narrowed. The Sun rules authority figures (such as the President), speculative enterprises (such as the stock market), our national focus and, in the U.S. map in particular, international policy (it rules the 9th). An inconjunct is a hard aspect, and a difficult manifestation of the energy would be anticipated. We don't shine as well. This aspect occurred once before in U.S. history, on the 24th of May, 1929. Here were some of the events that were going on as reported in the NY Times:

In foreign affairs on the 12th: Geneva and Australia were concerned by our Tariff Rise. We were distancing ourselves from our neighbors. From the 26th: Tariff Seen Uniting Europe Against Us. On the 18th we learned that "Japan Endorses our Navy Cut Stand." Oh, good. This was also the time during which Germany was re negotiating their war debt. The Germans , of course, wanted to cut the debt, and on the 21st, "Hoover's Debt Offer Hailed as Assuring Success At Paris." The next day's headlines: "Germans Condemn Revised Debt Plan." Guess it wasn't his day either. Our leader (the Sun) wasn't shining so well. His list continues: "Era of Prosperity in Nation Surveyed by Hoover Experts: High Standard of American Life Attained by Balance of Economic Forces: Labor Output at New Peak," front page, NY Times, May 15. It included the line, "We seem only to have touched the fringe of our potentialities." It was a great report for the Spring of 1929. Looked real good on paper. Hoover was the Chairman of the Commission.

So, those are some Sun inconjunct Sun activities. At such a time maybe follow the leader is not such a good idea. We're getting another chance right now to see what we've learned from history and to watch what parallels might occur leading into the 3rd of this year. But what I wanna know is, did anything happen right on the 24th in 1929?

Would you settle for the 23rd? "Stock Prices Break in Wide Selling Due to Bank Rate Scare." As measured by the N.Y. Times, the decline was the most violent on record.

What parallels will affect us this time? Check with you after the 3rd.

White House Confirms Reagans Follow Astrology,
Up to a Point

WASHINGTON, May 3 - President Reagan and his wife, Nancy, are both deeply interested in astrology, the White House spokesman, Marlin Fitzwater, said today, and two former White House officials said Mrs. Reagan's concerns had influenced the scheduling of important events.

Guided by the Stars

Guided by the Stars?

A California astrologer said she had been consulted by the Reagans regarding the key White House decisions, but Mr. Reagan said astrology had not influenced policy.

Followers of astrology believe the alignment of stars and planets influences human affairs. Such people consult charts, based on their birth dates, for clues concerning many decisions.

Mr. Fitzwater said Mrs. Reagan is particularly worried about the impact astrological portents can have on her husband's safety. But he declined to say exactly how Mrs. Reagan had used astrological information. And the President, answering a question at a photo-taking session said, "No policy or decision in my mind has ever been influenced by astrology."

The issue was stirred up by reports, first published in Newsweek, that Donald T. Regan, the former White House chief of staff, discusses the role of astrology in his memoirs. The memoirs are being published later this month by Harcourt, Brace Jonanovich and excerpts are scheduled to appear in the May 16 issue of Time Magazine.

The book will detail the "kinds of decisions that were made", under the influence of astrological readings, according to a former Administration official.

Another former official said the President timed his announcement that he would run for re-election after he and his wife consulted astrological signs.

Under the stars

Early in his political career, Mr. Reagan scheduled his inauguration as Governor of California in January 1967 to take place at an odd time, 12:10 A.M. News reports at the time said the decision was made to take advantage of favorable astrological portents.

In answer to a barrage of questions today, Mr. Fitzwater said: "It's true that Mrs. Reagan has an interest in astrology. She has for some time, particularly following the assassination attempt...

HINDSIGHT DEPARTMENT

Step back and take a look at this prediction. We hit the date on the head; May 3rd. We hit the principal player, the president. We had a glancing blow with the speculative enterprise; it was not the stock market, but astrology as it turned out. And finally, in spite of President Reagan's assertions, it did involve both domestic and international policy.

Once again, like so many of the other Web predictions, we need go no further than the front page of the New York Times to find what we're looking for. Certainly for most Americans, the President's ego was taking a hit. Naturally, Athena nodded in approval...
