The call to duty...

On Sunday, November 15th at 10:20 AM EST, Saturn will square Pluto. This is the first of a three-part series that will unfold into the up-coming year. It will fundamentally change the way we relate to each other on a number of levels.

Saturn is the planet of duty and responsibility. Many people don't like it. Saturn can be what's hard, difficult or tough. It's having to be at work the same time every day, day in, day out. But Saturn is also the foundation we build and rely on. We may not think much of our job, but we sure do like the regularity of that check coming in like clockwork.

Pluto is a planet of deeply-rooted issues. It's what we hold onto at our core, our inner resources. It's how we deal with separation. When Saturn squares Pluto, the standards change, a new structure needs to be put up as the older model is showing signs of its age.

On a personal level, some people will feel debt pulling their strings, adversely impacting how we relate to one another. Our time is limited, debt is playing tag with us, or the way ahead is tough.

On the political side, the financial strain on the government will become more evident. Cracks (Saturn) will begin to appear with added resources (Pluto) being called for. The legal system (Saturn in Libra) will itself be strapped for funds (Pluto). The dearth of resources will cause some laws to be thrown out as they simply cost too much money.

The first prong of this three-tiered wave is this Sunday, November 15th, 2009. Because Saturn and Pluto are both slower, outer moving planets, they're slowly sliding into place. Translation? We may have already started to feel it. On January 31, and August 21, 2010 there will follow two more 'contractions' related to this first one.

These squares will principally impact folks who have planets in early degrees of the cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The US chart has Venus and Jupiter at three and five degrees of Cancer. As a nation we'll feel the surge at these times. On a personal level, we need to commit to whatever (or whoever) we're working on (with), and it may not be easy. There is a conflict between our need to focus on what is essential (Pluto in Capricorn) and the strain it's putting on our relationships (Saturn in Libra), whether personal or professional.

Stronger efforts are called for at times of deeper transitions. These are more powerful alignments. For those who have planets in the early degrees, look to re-craft some of the foundation of your life. You may have to dig deep. While you're there, you can do some real work on the issue and realign some matters.

The flip side to this alignment is that this is when we can make significant changes, but they will take time and effort. Work with the elderly may be a case in point. Construction of any sort is always a possibility with Saturn, as is learning to work within the system.

The underlying theme of this alignment is cutting away portions of the past, to prepare for the future. The individual cost will become more apparent as we approach each of the three dates.

Time is one of our most precious commodities. As Saturn squares Pluto we will need to choose carefully how we spend ours.
