Pluto's Pivot

Lord of Darkness

Lord of the Underworld

On Thursday, April 2nd at 5:24 AM, Pluto will station in the heavens and begin its retrograde motion. It will pivot at 1 degree of Capricorn and nine minutes. Any who have planets in their chart in the 1st degree of any sign will feel the impact, but especially those who have planets either in the 1st degree of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn) or the earth signs (Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn). Capricorn is in both lists because it IS the cardinal earth sign.

The outer planets (those that are at the other end of the solar system, furthest from the Sun), 'fall' more slowly due to the gravitational attraction of our favorite star than do the inner planets such as Mercury, Venus and the Earth. Because the outer planets move more slowly, they focus their energies on a particular degree for a longer period of time. I like to compare it to passing one's finger through the flame of a candle. As long as you do it lightly and quickly, no problem, even though the temperature of the flame is quite hot. But, if you allow your finger to linger just a moment longer than you should, the power and concentration of the flame quickly gets us to reconsider our actions. Pain forces us to instinctively jerk the finger back.

When a planet stations, it seems to slow down and stop on a particular degree, concentrating the power of the 'flame' on that one spot, like a finger in the flame.

Since this is Pluto we're examining, one could think of it as the fires of the Underworld which are at work. Ptolemy, our oldest acknowledged astrological source, states that the pivots of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are among the most important, and bear careful consideration. He said this because Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were at that time the three known outermost planets. Since Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have been added (dare I say it?) to the 'planetary' list, these too pick up the additional charge.

Money, money, money

Money, money, money

But these pivot points are not limited to a single degree. The 'window' between the points Pluto last went direct on September 7th, 2007, and this retrograde positon on Wednesday are being 'reviewed' by this pivot. That means that if you have any planets in your chart between 26 Sagittarius 18 (where it was 9/7/7) and 1 degree and 9 minutes of Capricorn (where it is now), this celestial trigger will reactivate some of what you have been going through over the last six months, even though it is not making the 'exact' aspect now. It's as though Pluto were sweeping up the unaccounted leftovers that your soul is still finishing up on. Pluto going retrograde is a review period, as it is with any planet. What are Pluto issues? Taxes, paying bills, making enough money or control issues may be flushed to the surface. Sexual issues, death, and the relinquishment of power are also contenders. Pluto digs deep, and what is hidden there tends to be flushed at this time.

With the Moon triggering Pluto between 3 and 4 on Tuesday, and Mercury squaring Pluto early Thursday morning (the pivot is Wednesday) we will have ample opportunity to observe just what this alignment means for each of us. What is focusing your attention? What are you obsessing about? There's a cute English expression which seems to frame the question quite nicely.

What's got you by the short hairs?
