Aquarius

Well, this is the first full week in February, and that means that the Sun is in Aquarius, the eleventh sign of the zodiac. Aquarius is a fixed air sign ruled in modern times by Uranus. Before the discovery of that celestial body, it was ruled by Saturn. Some people think of Saturn and Uranus as co-rulers. The key words of Aquarius are 'I know'.

Each of these relationships help us to understand something about Aquarius. Because it is an air sign means that these people work with the intellect, information and data systems. They are often fascinated with both the future and the past, and can spend hours of time watching the History Channel or reading books learning about cultures, movements, empires and events. These folk can also be scientists, mathematicians, or astronomers; any field wherein significant qualities of information can be inputted and analyzed.

As a 'fixed' air sign, these people keep at whatever their discipline asks of them, learning over the course of decades more and more about their chosen field until they become quite encyclopedic about their topic. Knowledge is one of the fundamental keystones of Aquarius. To obtain it is a chosen goal. The Latin verb 'scio' (I know) is the etymological root of the English word 'science'. Because this is a fixed air sign, it can mean that whatever these youths latch onto, usually through their teen years, remains a lifelong interest.

While the Sun is in Aquarius during this month (Jan. 20th to Feb. 18th, 2007), it is in the sign of it's detriment. That means it is in a weakened position. The Sun rules Leo, wherein it does well. In August, the Sun is in its greatest power rising high in the sky during the lengthy daylight hours of summer. In the northern hemisphere, we feel it's heat as people take off for the holidays to have fun at the beach. In February, the Sun rises in a winter season where the night still has the majority advantage over the day. The Sun is not as warm, does not rise as high in the sky, and does not have as much time above the horizon as its summer compatriot, although it is slowly gaining ground on the hours of darkness.

As a rule, the Sun in its detriment also means that those with the Sun in Aquarius are not physically as strong as some of the other signs. The Sun controls our 'chi', an eastern term indicating the 'life force' flowing through our field. Naturally, this judgement needs to be weighed against other considerations in the chart, like where their Mars and/or Jupiter (two fire lords controlling the 'valves' of our initiative and physical power). Like the season to which they were born, Aquarians can seem to be cold and aloof. Their friends generally think the world of them, but their family may complain that they are not around enough. Aquarian warmth is often focused on larger social concerns rather than personal connections with family members. Naturally, all of the above are general themes, and most be weighed with other factors in the chart. For instance, if their Sun sign is Aquarius but they have a Moon in Cancer and Pisces rising (two water signs), then you will find a very warm and emotionally expressive individual. We will all learn more about the intricacies of this sign as we approach 2012 and the dawning of the 'Age of Aquarius,' a time when this vibration will move to the forefront of society's consciousness.
