Astrology is a language of symbolism.
Zodical Symbolism

Zodical Symbolism

It speaks to us through the images that are chiefly contained in the 12 signs of the zodiac, although it is not limited to these. In the classical tradition, there were 88 constellations. Each of these are a part of the symbolic vocabulary.

The recent vernal equinox, (March 20), when the Sun was positioned directly over the Earth's equator, marked the movement of the sun into the sign of Aries and inaugurated spring. To glean the meaning of the archetype, and hence this time of year, we'll look at the symbolism of both Aries and the Sun.

Aries

Aries

Aries is a cardinal fire sign, ruled by the planet Mars. Essentially it deals with the self. The keywords of this sign are "I am." Arien qualities include courage, bravery, leadership and individuality.

Those Arien qualities were dominant in civilizations for hundreds of years in the Age of Aries - from 2200 B.C.E. until the time of the Messiah - as the vernal equinox made its way through the constellation Aries. In astrology, the sun represents the heart and life itself, and it has a special relationship to Aries. It is said to be in its exaltation - the highest manifestation of its qualities - when in the sign of the ram. Because the Sun rules the male archetype, during the Age of Aries there was a special association between father and son (both ruled by the Sun), and many of the notables of this period were identified by whose son or father they were. When Abraham is asked to sacrifice his son, the angel stays his hand as he is getting ready to do it, and tells him, "Now I know that you fear God." The Ram is then substituted in place of his son.

Sacrificial Lamb

The Sacrificial Lamb

Jesus is thought of as the sacrificial lamb because he was crucified for what he believed. Both Abraham and Jesus were conscious of their commitment to the divine, and gave it everything they had.

Greek philosophy has it that the Fates have already determined the length of our contract here on Earth, and it is not how long we have, but what we do with that time that is important. That was what the symbolism of the sacrificial lamb was all about. To give of ourselves, fully, conscious and wholly, right up until the day we die, is the ultimate effort of the Sun's exaltation in Aries.

People with the Sun in Aries are fully aware of this notion, and focus their strength, daring and courage to do what must be done, acting on what they believe to be the correct moral course, and facing what their gut may tell them to run away from, very fast.
