This week our Astro 101 series turns the page and examines the last of the summer series: Virgo, the sign of the Virgin, coupled together with perfection. Ruled by Mercury, this mutable Earth sign is practical and filled with common sense. They thrive on mental definition. Virgo says: figure out the problem, employ the best techniques, and logic will win out over the day! Their minds really think that way; no kidding!
The Virgin separates wheat from the chaff. The time of year is associated with the harvest and all the good things that come from the Earth; of the corn, grain and fruits from the garden. This time, and these people, can be a Cornucopia of delight. The constellation Virgo holds a sheaf of wheat representative of these same themes. They embody quality and purity. In the service industry or in dealing with products, this high level of critical focus helps lend itself towards excellence. Sometimes it works. Unfortunately, its 'quality' is not always limited to material 'things'. For instance, who wouldn't want their meal composed of the finest possible ingredients, served under the cleanest of conditions? Who wouldn't want to use the best tools available while working in their garden, or on the job? But when these same notions spill over into ethnic, religious or social realms, each group can see their way as best and separation becomes segregation, bias becomes bigotry, and genealogy takes on overtones of 'holier than thou'.
In society Virgo represents the workers of life. In the agricultural year, the harvest had to be brought in. Children were released from school, if indeed, there was school. Today this celestial energy translates as our plumbers, electricians or support staff in hotels, jobs which often require teamwork. In times gone by, the maid might be someone conjured by these qualities, today, perhaps, she has been replaced by the secretary. Mentally, Virgo is always striving to figure out a better way, and there's always a better way.
On the down side, Virgos can get caught in the earth element, simply looking to increase their material possessions with more and more quantity. They like quality-crafted objects, whether they're baskets, lace or fine china. Naturally, if any of these are offered by name brand (Mercury) labels, so much the better. Finely chiseled features, robes with intricately woven designs, or needlecraft all have their appeal. Detail in design is appreciated. The earth itself is often sought as a means to an end, as land is the obvious manifestation of any earth sign. Of course, once they've made their purchase, then they must alphabetize, survey, or inventory whatever it was that they have just acquired to help it find its appropriate niche in their life. These things must be mentally groomed.
Virgo's have an intense loyalty which allows few people into the Temple. Notions of Duty, Honor and Country or Semper Fi stand out. Like Gemini, which Mercury also rules, oaths are part of the Messenger's realm, for they are what we say or speak. It is like an oath of brotherhood. It is the bond of our word to which we must obey and which helps strengthen moral fiber.
These are some of the qualities of the sign Virgo which can be found in almost any currently available newscounter astrology magazine. Now we shall begin to take a look at how some of these same threads were woven into works which are nearly three thousand years old. Take a moment to apply a critical eye to the lines of scripture and what was penned by Homer over the next two weeks.
