Welcome to the wonderful watery world of Cancer, the fourth sign of the zodiac. Some characteristics of this celestial slice is that it's a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. The Moon is one of the 'Big Three' in the natal chart; Sun, Moon and Ascendant, and therefore a major player in our charts, lives and daily activity. The Moon is our home, and this notion absorbs our bodies, house we live in, mothers, families, clans, tribes, towns, states, countries, and planet of our origin. At various levels, each one of these is our home. It rules food, which we all have an intimate relationship with. It's also memories, nostalgia, feelings, emotions and sensitivities. It rules the feminine gender and is associated with our moods and the tender, more sensitive parts of the body, such as the stomach, womb and breasts. In fact, in a woman's natal map, the Moon may be the single most important planet in the chart.
Symbolized by the Crab, Cancers like to take their homes with them. These are water babies, preferring to live on, near or with lakes, streams, rivers, boats or the seashore. Everyone knows the Moon rules tides. Now consider that a large percentage of our bodies are water, and that humans, too, fall under the influence of the pull of the Moon. Because Cancer is a cardinal water sign. This quality of water prefers to be in motion, whether of a rushing stream , the powerful current in a river or the pounding of the surf against the shore.
The Moon's metal is silver, one that is regularly employed in the utensils we use to eat our food. Even contemporary replacements such as stainless steel still looks like silver, in imitation of the older metal. Large feasts are an extension of Cancerian images, and all that goes with them: from silver cups and bowls brimming with wine, to plates heaped high with good things to eat. Unfortunately, this love of dietary delicacies can often lead to problems with their waistline. In youth the curves of Cancer can make for voluptuous bodies, but in mid-life these begin to lose a little of their 'tone', and become more fluid and fleshy. This sign of the zodiac loves to eat!
The notions of water and bodies come together in one more creation close to Cancer, and that's bathing. Whether showers or tubs, these tadpoles spend copious amounts of time in the bathroom, communing with and worshipping their water world. Adjacent to washing the body comes washing the clothes. Water is really big, whether eating, cleaning, drinking or swimming, Cancerians need the emotional transfusion which only this element can give. Give the Cancerian a sensory depravation experience in a liquid tank, and they will find themselves reborn.
Cycles of the Moon, whether to count the months or note the lunar phases from New to Full Moon, are Cancerian. While Cancer is a water sign, it can also be the land. Our homes are identified with this, as 'owning' a piece of property, it being 'our land'. Food is the produce, the bounty, the fruit of the land. Combining earth and water, Cancer and the Moon can be thought of as the Earth Mother, and indeed she is; providing all the bounty of wildcrafting and of the hunt. Lady Luna is the ancient guardian of the forest and its creatures, and whenever you enter this wild realm you are in her domain.
