At 8 PM EST, on March 19th, 2003, the final deadline passed. Bush's ultimatum for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq was ignored, and the two nations effectively considered themselves to be at war.

The War Begins

The War Begins

Astrology presupposes that the initial moment an endeavor is begun, it is 'born' and the future can be determined from that instant. The 'birth chart' for this war tells the story of what will happen as a result. What immediately jumps out of this chart is the Grand Air Trine which hugs the Ascendant. The Moon in Libra (21 degrees) was rising (20 degrees), and applying in a trine to Saturn (22 degrees) in Gemini, and just coming off a trine to Venus (20 degrees) in Aquarius.

A Grand Air Trine equates, among other things, to the air superiority which the coalition forces had established over Iraq. Their preparation in having already softened the air defense systems, initially responding to the individual 'pot shots' taken at them by the Iraqi's, but towards the end of last year more actively eliminating them wherever they might be found, help to set the stage.

Battle Marine

The massive high altitude bombardment of Baghdad Friday was a testament to this process. But this Grand Air Trine does not limit itself to the USAF and RAF. It also represents the coalition of forces themselves, with over 130 nations either actively or anomalously supporting the US effort. With Libra strong in the chart, (both the Moon and Ascendant), national diplomacy has been used in good measure. The Bush administration has worked feverishly to convince first the US Congress, the United Nations, and finally the coalition of forces of 'the willing' to get in line with its own perspective. However, while the UN agreed to go along with plans of disarmament, they were not willing to launch the war at this time, feeling as though much valuable work might still be achieved through the arms inspectors.

With Mars in Capricorn in this chart, preparations for this endeavor have been undertaken seriously. This is the sign of Mars's exaltation, and the months of training and application of past experience will be put to good use by the military.

The drawbacks to the chart are that the Sun is located in the 29th degree of Pisces. The invasion was launched on the last day of winter. Unforeseen circumstances will undermine the long term effects of the war, and many of the world's population will not support the final outcome. Additionally, Pallas Athena, the Goddess of War, is making hard aspects to the Ascendant, Moon, and Saturn in the chart, and some of the long term implications will increasingly begin to wear on the US, especially financially. Like the Sun, Pallas Athena is also in Pisces, and put quite simply, this is a foolish move; it lacks wisdom.

Bustin' in the door

Bustin' in the door

With the strength of the Grand Trine, there is little doubt about the short term impact of the war. It will be won by the coalition forces, and in comparatively short order. However, on March 22nd and 23rd, as transiting Athena squared Mars in the US chart, 11 US soldiers took a wrong turn and were captured or killed by Iraqi forces, a US plane was shot down by the Baghdad air defence, and a Patriot missile brought down an RAF jet bringing the reality of the war, and it's devastation, a little closer to US hearts and homes.
